Adding color to finished textiles may have originally been done by hand-painting textiles, but there is evidence that textile printing was used in India and China as early as the 4th century AD. Archaeologists exploring an Egyptian cemetery have discovered a printing plate built around 300 AD. This discovery confirms that Egyptian craftsmen also used cloth printing techniques. Textile printing is also popular in Mexico and Peru. By the end of the 14th century, woodblock printing was being used on textiles in France. Printed cotton from India became popular in Britain in the 17th century, but its use was discouraged due to concerns that it would threaten the silk industry.
